Modern approaches to levothyroxine suppressive therapy of high differentiated thyroid cancer

Abstract

The discussion material presented in the review of suppressive therapy used in patients with operated high differentiated thyroid cancer justifies the need in suppressive therapy in effort to suppress the proliferation of residual thyroid cells and to reduce a risk of a re-growth of tumors. Along with this, the data on the side effects of subclinic hyperthyroidism developing due to the use of supraphysiological thyroxine doses are presented. Having considered the literature data, normative documents and own experience, it is expedient to find a balanced approach allowing both for the risks of a re-growth of tumors and for the risks of side effects of levothyroxine suppressive therapy.
