Root and canal morphology of the first and second mandibular molars
Abstract
The aims of this study were to identify the root canal morphology of the first and second mandibular molars and to define the frequency of the distolingual roots of the first mandibular molars and the C-shaped roots and canals in the second mandibular molars. We collected 209 CBCT images of the first mandibular molars and 236 CBCT images of the second mandibular molars from 129 subjects. Most of the mandibular molars in this study (99 % of the first molars and 91.1 % of the second molars) had two separate roots. The frequency of the three-rooted first mandibular molars was 1 %. The C-shaped configuration of the root system was determined at 5.1 % of the second mandibular molars. Of 209 first mandibular molars examined, three canals were present in 84.6 %, four canals - in 12 %. In the two-rooted second mandibular molars, 79.7 % of cases had three canals and 14.4 % of cases had two canals. The distal root of mandibular molars showed predominantly the I Vertucci type, while the mesial root had more complex canal systems. In most of the cases, the mesial root of the first and second mandibular molars showed IV and II Vertucci types. Transversal anastomoses were detected in 21.6 % of the lower molars. 58 % of the accessory canals were detected in the apical third, 38 % - in the middle third, and 4 % - in the cervical third of the roots of the first and second mandibular molars.
