<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The meta-analysis of prospective studies suggested that heavy alcohol consumption might be associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome while very light alcohol consumption seemed to be associated with a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome. Light-to-moderate alcohol consumption decreased the hypertension risk in women and increased the risk in men. Increased uptake of alcohol is related to a statistically significant but quantitatively small increase in the body weight of men. A dual relationship exists between alcohol consumption and diabetes mellitus. Light-to-moderate drinking may be beneficial while heavy drinking is detrimental.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>метаболический синдром</kwd><kwd>употребление алкоголя</kwd><kwd>артериальная гипертензия</kwd><kwd>избыточный вес</kwd><kwd>сахарный диабет</kwd><kwd>толерантность к глюкозе</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>metabolic syndrome</kwd><kwd>alcohol consumption</kwd><kwd>arterial hypertension</kwd><kwd>excessive weight</kwd><kwd>diabetes mellitus</kwd><kwd>tolerance to glucose</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Избыточная масса тела и ожирение: эффективность модификации образа жизни и контроля поступающих с пищей жиров / Л.
